Found this '73 Fatstang on craigslist. To be honest, I'm kind of a sucker for the '71-'73 Fastbacks, even if the majority of them were pretty terrible. Today's example must've been ordered by someone on a strict budget. This car looks like it has almost no options. Standard 302 2bbl, standard 3-speed manual, no console, AM radio. The only two options that are mentioned in the ad are power steering and power brakes, which were relatively common. What is the most rare thing about this car is the 3-speed. Data says only 6.7% of all Mustangs made that year had the 3-speed. I kinda like it, but $8500 is a lot to pay for a car like this. So, what does Oppo think? NP or CP?

For me it's CP because of the 3-speed. Driven one, no fun. And rust.

Really, with a car like this you have to ask yourself "what's it worth to me ?" Lot's of people will tell you "Flat-back 71 to 73 Rustang is teh lames, worth only $45 bla bla bla" but I, like you, kinda have a chubby for them. If I had $8500 burning a hole in my pocket, I'd consider this car. If I had more money, I'd like to build a pro-touring car out of one!
Also, having spent a considerable amount of time in one with non-power 4-wheel drums, I can say THANK THE GODS THIS ONE HAS DISKS! The 4-wheel drums are miserable all the time forever.

Lol. Its pretty cool, for sure. I just feel like you could find a more well-appointed example for a little more cash.

Yeah, I can understand that. And having it mated to the 302 2bbl really doesn't do any favors either. The car doesn't look too rusty, though. I'm sure its a lot worse in person, but still.

Yeah, good point. I'd consider it for its looks and the rarity of its options. And, DAMN, now I really want to make a pro-touring Fatstang. That would be unbelievably amazing.
Oh, for sure. That would be kind of ridiculous if it had 4-wheel drums. Lol

My '66 has the 3 speed. It's horrendous: No syncros between 1st and 2nd, ratios don't seem to be quite right (too high rpm in third, not enough in 1st, etc), and their nickname is the 'paper' transmission which speaks to the power it can handle.
4 speed Toploader prices are higher than ever now, so I'd get a t-10 for 200 or so to fix that up.

Buy it. Swap in a T-5 5speed and a Roller E7TE headed 302 with a 4bbl and drive it everyday!

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense. I never thought the 3-speed would be that great, especially in that '73. It just kind of surprises me, though, that there is still one left with the original 3-speed.

Hell yeah! Solid plan, for sure.
